Chancellor Caret to Step Down in 2020

Chancellor Robert L. Caret announced that he will step down from his position on June 30, 2020. During Caret’s tenure, enrollment has increased from 164,000 to 176,000 students across the system, coinciding with an increase in diversity and inclusion and the USM has built upon its role as an economic engine and economic catalyst for the state, with the number of degrees awarded rising to more than 42,000 per year. As a result of the progress attained under Caret’s leadership, nearly 50 percent of USM undergraduate students now graduate without debt.

Dr. Mickey L. Burnim Appointed Interim President of Coppin State University

Mickey L. Burnim will serve as interim president of Coppin State University starting on July 1. Current Coppin State University President Maria Thompson will step down June 30. Dr. Burnim served as president of Bowie State University between 2006 and 2017. Dr. Burnim also served as interim president of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore during the summer of 2018 before the start of President Heidi Anderson’s tenure on September 1.

UMCP Celebrates Opening of Brendan Iribe Center for Computer Science and Engineering

UMCP celebrated the opening of the Iribe Center at the end of April. According to UMCP, "The Center was made possible by the generosity and vision of its namesake, a Maryland alumnus and co-founder of the virtual reality company Oculus; the state of Maryland; and more than 110 additional donors, including fellow Oculus co-founder Michael Antonov ’03, and 38 faculty and staff members."

Timothy J. McDonough Appointed USM Vice Chancellor for Communications and Marketing

Chancellor Robert L. Caret has appointed Timothy J. McDonough as the system's vice chancellor for communications and marketing. McDonough is a veteran communications professional with considerable experience in higher education on a national scale. He comes to the USM from his current position as Vice President for Government and Public Affairs at the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges (AGB).
