Foundation President and CEO Leonard Raley was published in Trusteeship, the Association of Governing Board’s bimonthly magazine. In his article, “The Five Characteristics of Great Foundation Board Members,” Leonard notes that he has had the privilege of working with many great board members throughout his career and has seen first-hand what traits stand the test of time.

According to Leonard’s article, here are the five characteristics of great foundation board members:

1. A great foundation board member is a leader.
2. A great foundation board member is a learner and a listener.
3. A great foundation board member is a grateful giver of time, treasure, and talent.
4. A great foundation board member is a diligent team player.
5. A great foundation board member is a faithful (but not unquestioning) advocate.

Leonard acknowledges that the work of foundations has never been more important, as the pandemic has exposed many challenges for colleges and universities. In turn, the work of great board members who are dedicated to helping their organizations thrive is just as important.
