Bill Couper spent 40 years with Bank of America and predecessors, the last 17 in leadership roles as President of the Baltimore region (1995 – 2000), Greater Washington, DC (2000 – 2005) and the Mid-Atlantic region (2005 – 2012). In those roles, he was responsible for aligning many lines of business teams to deliver the full resources of the Bank to clients and customers. Mr. Couper was also the senior leader in those markets for philanthropy, sponsorships and volunteerism.
He had senior roles in Risk Management (2001 – 2005), Business Banking (1995 – 2001) and Consumer Banking. Mr. Couper has extensive experience with change management through the mergers of American Security Bank with Maryland National Bank (1987) and Maryland National Bank with NationsBank/Bank of America (1993).
In addition to his leadership roles with the Bank, Mr. Couper chaired the following organizations: Maryland Chamber of Commerce (2001 – 2003), United Way of the National Capital Area (2003 – 2005), the Greater Washington Initiative (2004 – 2006), the Greater Washington Board of Trade (2008) and the Virginia Bankers Association (2011 – 2012). He also served on many other non-profit boards in Washington, Baltimore and Virginia, and led fundraising efforts for United Way of Central Maryland (1997), the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Annual Fund (1999) and Neighborhood Housing Services of Baltimore (1997).
Mr. Couper continues board affiliations with Goucher College, MedStar Health, and the University System of Maryland Foundation, and continues to be active with the Greater Washington Board of Trade.
Mr. Couper is a graduate of the McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia and he completed programs at the Defense Language Institute (Certificate in Portuguese) and the College for Financial Planning (Certified Financial Planner).
