Robert Owen Johnson, Jr. (Owen)

Retired Board Chair, Prince George’s County Board of Education

A lifelong resident of Prince George’s County, Owen Johnson was elected in December of 2006 as Board Chair for the Prince George’s County Board of Education, on which he served until his retirement in 2010. Prior to his position on the Board, he served as Supervisor of Interscholastic Athletic Programs, Dean of Academics and Student Affairs, Vice Principal, Athletic Director, Coach, and Teacher for the school system. In 2003 Mr. Johnson was inducted into the Maryland State Athletic Directors Association Hall of Fame. From 2011 until 2019, Mr. Johnson served as chair for the Excellence in Education Foundation for Prince George’s County Public Schools

After having served in the United States National Guard for nearly 25 years, he retired with the rank of Sergeant Major in 2005. Mr. Johnson also served his country as a Program Coordinator under the direction of the Teachers Training Program of the Peace Corps in Venezuela.

Mr. Johnson graduated from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and has remained connected to the University by serving in many roles, most notably on the Board of Visitors as well as on the Alumni Association. In 2017 he was inducted into the Hall of Excellence for Lifetime Achievement in Community Service, and in 2020 he was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Distinguished Alumni. Mr. Johnson received his Master of Arts in Education and Curriculum Development from National Louis University.

In retirement, he has actively supported the Prince George’s County Board of Elections in numerous ways including working in preparation for and during the elections held during the pandemic. Mr. Johnson continues to serve the community by volunteering directly with senior citizens and youth.
