Harry S. Johnson

Partner, Whiteford, Taylor & Preston

Harry Johnson is a litigation partner at Whiteford, Taylor & Preston, LLP.  A native of Havre de Grace, Maryland, he graduated from UMBC (1976) and the University of Maryland School of Law (1979).  He is a member of the Maryland and District of Columbia Bars.  His practice focuses on complex litigation, with an emphasis on product liability.  He also represents governments in litigation ranging from civil rights to religious land use.  He was named one of America’s Top Black Lawyers by Black Enterprise Magazine in 2003 and was recognized with The Daily Record’s ‘Leadership in Law” award the same year.  He was presented with The Daily Record’s ‘Leadership in Law Lifetime Achievement Award’ in 2018, and with its ‘Icon Award’ in 2019.

Harry served as the first African American President of the Maryland State Bar Association from 2003-2004.  He has been a member of the ABA House of Delegates since 2003, and currently is the State Delegate for Maryland.  He served on the prestigious Standing Committee on the Federal Judiciary from 2007-2010.  He was a member of the ABA Commission on Racial and Ethnic Diversity from 2012-2014, and was Chair of the ABA Standing Committee on Public Education from 2015-2017.  In 2019 he was elected by the HOD to serve a five year term on the Committee on Scope and Correlation of Work.

Harry currently serves as Chair of the Executive Committee of the Maryland Hospital Association. He is currently a member of the Board of Directors of Greater Baltimore Healthcare (GBMC), where he served as Chair from 2011-2014.  In the past, he has served on the Boards of the Baltimore Community Foundation, State Office of the Public Defender, Baltimore County Human Relations Commission (Chair), CenterStage, Baltimore Educational Scholarship Trust (BEST) and the Afro-American Newspapers.  He is also a graduate of the GBC Leadership Program.
