Joseph B. Gildenhorn is a founding partner of The JBG Companies, a diversified real estate development and management company that has developed many of the significant office buildings, residential buildings, and hotels in the greater Washington, D.C. area. He was also a founding partner of Brown, Gildenhorn & Jacobs in Washington, D.C., a law firm that specialized in real estate. Gildenhorn served as the U.S. Ambassador to Switzerland from 1989 until 1993. Prior to that, he was vice chair of the D.C. National Sovran Bank and Franklin National Bank.
Gildenhorn currently serves as Chairman of the Board of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars; a Trustee of the University of Maryland Foundation, Inc.; and formerly served as Chairman and is currently a board member of the University of Maryland College Park Foundation.
Mr. Gildenhorn received his J.D. from Yale University in 1954, and he is a 1951 graduate of the University of Maryland College of Business and Management. In 1996, he received the UMCP President’s Distinguished Alumnus Award; was named Washingtonian of the Year in 1996 by the Washingtonian magazine; and in 2000 was recipient of the Woodrow Wilson award for Corporate Citizenship from The Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars.
