President’s Message
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
Fall has arrived, and with it, increased activity with the return of students to our campuses.
I will begin with wonderful news: a fabulous gift recently received by the University of Maryland, College Park. Maryland developer, philanthropist, and Terrapin alumnus Ed St. John has given the university $10 million, one of the largest gifts in Maryland's history. His gift is truly "groundbreaking" - it will allow the university to build the first dedicated classroom facility on campus in decades. Please see the story below for more information about this generous gift.
This is among several milestone gifts seen at College Park under the leadership of its vice president for university relations, Brodie Remington. It is with mixed emotions that I share the news that our friend and colleague will be resigning his post sometime during the summer of 2012. After 12 years at the helm, Brodie has decided to step down, but he will continue to assist the campus in an advisory capacity. The University of Maryland has accomplished much through Brodie's leadership: it has raised more than $1.2 billion in support, developed its brand presence (such as Fear the Turtle), and continued to build strong alumni affinity, participation and commitment to the university. I want to thank Brodie for his steadfast service to both the University of Maryland and the System.
Other campuses are marking significant milestones as well. Towson University celebrated the completion of its $50 million campaign on October 5 and recently announced the appointment of Maravene Loeschke, Ph.D., as president (see article below). Other institutions that have reached their campaign goals include: Frostburg State University, Salisbury University; University of Maryland, Baltimore County; University of Maryland Eastern Shore; and University of Maryland University College. Several others are close to meeting their campaign goals. These achievements, especially during these tough economic times, are remarkable.
I am happy to report that we are making significant progress in our search for a new chief investment officer. The USM Foundation has hired Charles Skorina to lead the search. Skorina is the author of The Skorina Report, a well-respected newsletter in the investment field, as well as an executive search professional. There has been much interest in the position, and we expect to begin the interview process in November.
As always, please contact me at raley@usmd.edu with any questions or comments.
Sincerely,
Leonard R. Raley
