Robert E. Fischell is an inventor and Chairman and CEO of Fischell Biomedical, LLC. Prior to that, Dr. Fischell had been President and Chair of MedIn Tec, a small medical technology company in Dayton, Maryland. MedIn Tec produced Dr. Fischell’s inventions, which include a medical device to assist in procedures such as balloon angioplasty, and a radioisotope which is implanted into arteries after surgery and holds the promise of replacing many heart by-pass operations.

Dr. Fischell spent 36 years with the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, which resulted in 53 patents in both aerospace and biomedical technology. Prior to his employment with the Applied Physics Lab, Dr. Fischell worked at the U.S. Naval Ordnance Lab and was a staff physicist at Emerson Radio. During this time, Dr. Fischell also established the privately-held IsoTent in Belmont, California with his son. The company was merged with Cordis Company, a Johnson & Johnson company in Florida, in 1998.

Dr. Fischell is the recipient of numerous professional awards, including NASA’s Exceptional Engineering Award, Individual Achievement Award and Inventor of the Year Award. The United States Senate awarded him the Gold Medal for Contributions to Aerospace Science and he was inducted into the Space Technology Hall of Fame. In addition, he has been recognized for three years by Industrial Research Magazine for creating one of the 100 most significant inventions of the year. Dr. Fischell serves on the Board of Visitors and the College of Business and Management Advisory Board at the University of Maryland, College Park where he earned his M.S. in Physics in 1953.

In 1996, he was awarded an Honorary Degree from the University. He has established the Robert E. Fischell Lecture at the College of Computer, Mathematical and Physical Sciences. His undergraduate degree was completed at Duke University. He and his wife, Susan, live in Dayton, Maryland.
