Richard E. Hug is a 1956 graduate of Duke University (BS, MF) and he began his business career with Koppers Company, Inc. He was named a Corporate Vice President of Koppers in 1973. For the ensuing 22 years, he served as President, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Environmental Elements Corporation, a company specializing in air pollution control systems for the utility and industrial markets and listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 1991.
In 1995, Mr. Hug retired, but remained a Director and principal stockholder and Chairman Emeritus until the company’s sale in 2006. His current business interests are several, including the Great American Car Wash (principal owner) and the Eggspectations restaurant chain (investor and Chairman). Mr. Hug is well-known for his civic involvement and has served as Chairman of the Maryland Chamber of Commerce, Maryland Business for Responsive Government, Leadership Maryland, The National Aquarium in Baltimore, the Kennedy Krieger Institute, the United Way of Central Maryland, and the Duke University School of the Environment. He was named the National Outstanding Volunteer Fund Raiser in 1992, and has led numerous area fund drives including those benefiting the National Aquarium in Baltimore, the United Way and the University of Maryland Medical System.
Currently, he sits on the Boards of the University System of Maryland Foundation, Duke University School of Environment, Loyola College in Maryland, AAA Maryland, and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. He also is involved in a number of business and real estate investments. Mr. Hug has been politically active in recent years, serving as Finance Chairman for the 1998 Sauerbrey and the 2002 and 2006 Ehrlich gubernatorial campaigns. Mr. Hug also served as Maryland’s Finance Chairman for the Bush for President Campaign in 2000 and 2004 and was accorded “Pioneer,” “Team 2000,” and “Super Ranger” status during the Campaigns.
