Philip Down is President of Doctors Community Hospital in Lanham, Maryland. Doctors Community Hospital is a 250 bed not-for-profit community hospital with 900 employees and an operating budget of $95 million. The hospital was formerly AMI Doctor’s Hospital of Prince George’s County until it was purchased from American Medical International by Doctor’s Hospital, Inc. in 1990. Doctors Community Hospital provides full medical-surgical and transitional care. Mr. Down has been with this organization since 1986, and is currently responsible for the governance, strategic direction, finances and overall operations of the institution.
Prior to this position, Mr. Down served as vice president for operations of Howard County General Hospital from 1978 until 1986, and director of general services for North Shore Children’s Hospital in Salem Massachusetts from 1977 until 1978. In addition, Mr. Down served in administration for three other Massachusetts hospitals from 1970 until 1977, including St. Elizabeth’s of Boston, St. Margaret’s Hospital, and St. John’s Hospital.
Mr. Down’s professional affiliations include the American College of Health Care Executives, the Maryland Hospital Association, the American Hospital Association, and the Hospital Executives Association. Mr. Down is a board member of the Prince George’s Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Washington Board of Trade, the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association, and the Rotary Club. In 1995, he was appointed a commissioner of the Maryland Health Services Cost Review Commission for a term of four years. Mr. Down earned his B.S. in Business Administration from Norwich University in 1970, and his Master’s in Health Care Administration from The George Washington University in 1973.
He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Medical Service Corp of the United States Army in 1970 and fulfilled his active duty obligation. Mr. Down resides with his wife and two children in Ellicott City, Maryland.
