Willard Hackerman Establishes $1M Scholarship at Towson University to Attract STEM Students

Gift Creates Hackerman Presidential Polytechnic Scholarship

Willard Hackerman, Baltimore Polytechnic Institute Class of 1935, has donated $1 million to Towson University to establish scholarships enabling qualifying Baltimore Polytechnic Institute ("Poly") graduates to attend the university tuition-free.

Because of his long-standing interest in and support of science and technology, Hackerman has designated his gift to benefit graduates of Baltimore Polytechnic Institute who intend to enroll at Towson University in the fall semester immediately following graduation from high school. Selection will be based on financial need, academic achievement and/or exceptional talent.

"It is critical that we be able to attract more students into STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) majors and to prepare teachers who will be energized to teach in area schools in these much needed discipline areas," Hackerman said. "Poly graduates are especially well-suited to meet these needs, and it is my wish to give them the opportunity to develop their gifts at Towson University."

Hackerman, president of the Whiting-Turner Contracting Company and a Baltimore philanthropist, previously donated $1 million to establish the Willard Hackerman Academy of Mathematics and Science at Towson University.
