President Barack Obama has chosen Maryland Secretary of Transportation John Porcari to be deputy secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation. Porcari was the vice president for administration and finance at the University of Maryland from 2003 until 2007.
UMB President David J. Ramsay has announced the appointment of Phoebe A. Haddon as the ninth dean of the University of Maryland School of Law. Haddon will be the first African-American dean in the school's 185-year history. Currently a distinguished faculty member at the Temple University Beasley School of Law, she will replace Dean Karen H. Rothenberg, who after a decade as dean is stepping down to return to the faculty. Haddon earned an L.L.M. from Yale Law School and a J.D. from Duquesne University School of Law. She received a bachelor's degree from Smith College.
UB President Robert Bogolmony has appointed Joseph S. Wood provost and vice president for academic affairs effective July 1. A veteran administrator and geographer, Wood currently is the provost at the University of Southern Maine. He has a bachelor's degree from Middlebury College, a master's from the University of Vermont and a doctorate from Penn State University, all in geography.
University of Maryland President C. D. Mote has appointed Ann G. Wylie vice president for administrative affairs. She has served as interim vice president since November 2008. Wylie is a highly regarded member of the faculty who has provided exemplary senior administrative leadership in a number of capacities: as assistant president and chief of staff; interim dean of the Graduate School; associate provost; and acting associate dean of the College of Computer, Mathematical and Physical Sciences. Wylie earned her bachelor’s degree in geology from Wellesley College and her Ph.D., also in geology, from Columbia University.
The University of Maryland has announced that Donald F. Kettl has been named the new dean of the School of Public Policy. He will assume the post in June. Kettl is a professor of political science and the Robert A. Fox Professor of Leadership at the University of Pennsylvania. He replaces former dean Steven Fetter, who was appointed to a post in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.
James P. Clements, provost and vice president for academic affairs at Towson University, has been named president-elect of West Virginia University in Morgantown, W.Va. effective June 30, 2009. Clements received a bachelor of science in computer science and an M.S. and Ph.D. in operations analysis from UMBC, as well as an M.S. in computer science from Johns Hopkins University.
Chancellor Brit Kirwan and the University of Maryland School of Architecture hosted a reception on April 7 to preview the new Colvin Institute of Real Estate Development.
Chancellor Kirwan hosted a dinner to welcome Robert A. Chrencik, the new president and chief executive officer of the University of Maryland Medical System. Chrencik has worked for UMMS for 25 years and previously held the post of executive vice president and chief financial officer since 1999. He earned a B.S. degree summa cum laude from Bucknell University. He earned an M.B.A. from Loyola College in Maryland and is a Certified Public Accountant.
Chancellor Kirwan and the University of Maryland School of Social Work cohosted a Chautauqua program at Hidden Waters on April 26 entitled, “Social Change in the New Economy: How Shall We Bear the Costs?”
