We are sad to share that long-time director of our board and former Regent, Richard E. Hug, has passed away. Dick joined the Foundation in 2002 and was an active and thoughtful director who served on the Executive Committee. As a Regent, his help in securing support for the University System of Maryland was immeasurable, and his passion for advancing the quality of higher education in this state was profound. Dick was an active alumnus of Duke University who demonstrated a commitment to Maryland’s higher education institutions repeatedly over the last decade.

Dick also played a role at many Maryland-based organizations, such as the National Aquarium, the Kennedy Krieger Institute, the University of Maryland Medical System, the United Way of Central Maryland, Loyola University in Maryland, and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Additionally, Dick was active politically, serving as a key advisor to Governor Erhlich, as Maryland’s campaign chair for George W. Bush’s presidential campaigns, and as a senior advisor in Governor Romney’s presidential campaign.

We are grateful to all the wonderful work Dick led here at the USM Foundation and will miss him terribly. Please contact us for address information if you wish to send Dick’s family a consolation note.

This year, the University System of Maryland Foundation decided to highlight the partnership between the institutions within the University System of Maryland (USM) and the Foundation by way of an art contest that we hope will become an annual tradition. We felt an art contest would be a great way to strengthen the connection between the Foundation and the students, faculty, and staff we ultimately serve.

There was an incredible response, with faculty, staff, and students submitting different types of artwork to reflect upon our theme. Contestants were encouraged to consider the following quote: “Do not fear the winds of adversity. Remember: a kite rises against the wind rather than with it” – unknown. In addition to the grand prizewinner, there were several runners up who are featured throughout the 2012 Annual Report. Click on the names or artwork below to read more about our winning pieces and their creators.

Dear Board members and colleagues,

I am thrilled to share great news about Kevin Dalmut, our senior investment analyst at the Foundation. Kevin was recently named on the CIO “Forty Under (Mostly) Forty” list in Asset International CIO Magazine, a widely read and respected publication for institutional investors. This list spotlights the brightest stars in the pension and nonprofit investment management world. The link to the article can be found here: http://www.ai-cio.com/datasurvey.aspx?id=4438; Kevin’s profile can be found here: http://www.ai-cio.com/datasurvey.aspx?id=4438&page=7.

Kevin’s group, dubbed the Generation Y group, is described as the “prodigies of the asset owner universe,” and the authors of this report predict that one member of the group will manage one of the top 10 funds in the world in under 15 years. Those of us who know Kevin can easily imagine him in this role—but we’d rather imagine him growing our endowment for many years to come.

Over the past year, I have come to know Kevin as one of the hardest-working, diligent, and intelligent young professionals I’ve ever met. To say he has done some heavy lifting in the last year is a vast understatement. I hope you will join me in congratulating Kevin for his well-deserved honor.

Sincerely yours,

Leonard R. Raley
