University of Maryland Campaign Passes 50% Mark, Raises $130M in Fiscal Year 2008
The University of Maryland Great Expectations campaign has raised $534.7 million through June 30, 2008, taking it well past the half way mark towards its $1 billion goal. During the past fiscal year, the university raised just over $130.7 million. Of this amount, $59 million came from individuals, $59 million from corporations and foundations, and $11 million from other organizations. Notable gifts include:
- A pledged bequest of $300,000 by Terrapin Club member Clayton L. Warrington and his wife, Elizabeth, to establish a named endowed scholarship in the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics for members of the men’s lacrosse team.
- A $220,000 bequest from the late Virginia H. Murray, widow of the late Guy Edward Murray ’36, for the acquisition of laboratory equipment for the A. James Clark School of Engineering and the College of Chemical and Life Sciences.
- A $200,000 charitable gift annuity from newspaper publisher and friend of the Merrill College of Journalism, Ralph Hostetter, to support the General Scholarship Fund, a campus-wide scholarship fund that benefits needy Maryland undergraduates regardless of major.
- A $100,000 grant from the Ford Foundation awarded over two years to the David C. Driskell Center to produce two high-quality catalogs that document the work of contemporary artists Robin Holder and William T. Williams and adapt the printed catalogs into an online format. Support will also enhance the Center’s African American and African diasporic art education initiatives, in part through active partnerships with area middle and high schools.
- A $200,000 endowment by Shirley Willcher and her sons, Joel ’06 (a former student Regent) and Benjamin ’03 to establish The Willcher Family Veterans Scholarship in memory of husband and father Ernest M. Willcher ’61. Mr. Willcher served and worked with the Army for more than 40 years. He later joined Booz Allen and was attending a meeting at the Pentagon on September 11, 2001, when he perished in the tragic events of that day. The Willcher Family Veterans Scholarship launches the Division of Student Affairs Veterans Initiative, which aims to better serve returning veteran students through scholarships, outreach and programming.
- A $100,000 gift by Paul Mandell ’95 and his wife, Lisa, to establish the Paul S. and Lisa M. Mandell Endowed Scholarship, which will reward the highest achieving sophomore in Government and Politics with a scholarship for their junior and senior years at the University of Maryland.
During the upcoming year, the University Relations staff and volunteers plan to raise $130 million in new gifts and pledges in order to top $660 million for the campaign.
