62% of charities said they raised more money last year than in 2012, the largest share since 2007, when 65% increased donations. Much of last year’s bounty came from gains in big gifts from wealthy donors and from special fundraising events and online appeals. Additionally, 75% of charities did better last year in part because they had strong systems in place to woo donors and keep them informed about how their money was being used.
Here’s a fun new idea for ways to engage nonalumni major donors: invite them to a great conversation. The University of Houston has been running “The Great Conversation” fundraiser for 22 years, which is a hybrid between a dinner party and a college seminar, and it raises $300,000 annually.
The University of Baltimore will offer free tuition to college students in their final semester if they can finish their degrees in four years. Dubbed "Finish4Free," the deal is to be offered to this fall's freshmen when they reach their senior year.
